CASHMERE YARN AND
CROCHETED ITEMS FOR
SALE
All of these American Cashmere products are 100% Made in Montana. The goats are raised here, well-fed
and happy. The fiber is processed here in the Flathead Valley, and I spin and crochet all of it here on the farm.
Cashmere comes from a goat with a double coat. The coarse outer guard hairs and the downy undercoat. To get
the cashmere, one has to get it off the goat. That can be done in one of two ways; shearing, or combing. I comb the
hair off when the goats start shedding in the spring. They love it. Then I have to "de-hair" it, which is removing the
outer hairs from the soft undercoat.
There is a mill that processes animal fleeces in the Flathead Valley now that has a machine which will de-hair the
cashmere. In fact, in a recent survey they were rated number one in the country for processing cashmere! After that
is done, I can then spin it into wonderfully soft yarn and crochet it into luxurious accessories. Small, but affordable
items. Ooohhh so soft!!
Real, top quality Cashmere is an expensive fiber. The demand far exceeds the supply. The goats only produce a
few ounces a year. Usually 3 to 6 ounces of fiber can be recovered from each goat. It takes about an hour to comb a
goat, depending on how thick the coat is. If the timing is just right, it only takes one combing to get all the undercoat.
Usually it takes at least two.
It takes the average goat 6 years to grow enough cashmere to make a sweater!

PINE NEEDLE FARM CASHMERES
Please be aware of the inexpensive
cashmere sold in the various box stores!
It comes with a hidden cost. It is
imported from countries where they add
wool and other fibers to the cashmere
and still call it 100% cashmere.
True 100% top quality cashmere is
rare and expensive!!! It will also last a
lifetime with good care.
The cheap cashmere will pill and
become unwearable very quickly. It also
comes from goats that have been eating
on over grazed land and are hungry,
which makes their fiber coarse and
brittle. Remember, you get what you
pay for!!
On the other hand, North American
Cashmere is from happy well-fed goats
that have outstanding fiber! Please buy
American. There are cashmere growers
from coast to coast!
Thank-you!
Pashmina is nothing more than the
Indian (India) word for cashmere.
Some marketers are using the word to
describe a silk/cashmere blend, others
a superfine cashmere, and yet others
don't even have any cashmere in it!
So Pashmina is not some exotic
creature, or fiber. Just another word
for cashmere.

kinds of interesting facts about
cashmere and the marketing of it.
Very educational!!
"I absolutely love my cashmere hat
and scarf..thanks Ann! They are
both
so beautifully made and fit
perfectly. I go to school in Indiana
so the
winters are pretty brutal, but I was
amazed at how warm they kept me
even though they are so light
weight and stylish. Many of my
friends
have come up to ask me where they
can get one too!"

Here is what some of my
customers have to say about Pine
Needle Farm Cashmere.
Melanie's Hat
""Kila Cashmere" - Wow. I feel so
fortunate to have found your
exceptional and totally local product.
It has been such a joy knitting the
baby booties and cap from the yarn
you spun and dyed for me. Besides
being luxurious and light, it is so
strong. I can't believe how well it
withstood the strain I put on it in
reworking some serious errors.
I have really appreciated working
with you, Ann. Thank you for being
so accommodating to my specific
requests and for helping me work
out what I needed for my patterns.
I'm spoiled now! " ~ Eileen B.

North American Cashmere is a soft and wonderful product. It
comes from goats that are well-fed and happy. The Asian
cashmere comes from goats that are often hungry, barely
subsisting on sparse vegetation. There has been some very
harsh weather in that part of the world for quite a few years,
affecting the land and animals very adversely. Asian cashmere
has a "hunger fineness" which makes it soft, but brittle. Not the
top quality fiber it once was. The land has become over-grazed,
the goats hungry, and the herders poor. The middleman is getting
all the profits over there, not the actual raisers of the goats.
The American consumer will benefit the whole world by buying
American Cashmere instead of foreign. By buying "local" you
know exactly what you are getting, where it comes from, and you
are helping the American economy. American cashmere goats
are healthy, well taken care of animals with exceptional fleece!
