PINE NEEDLE FARM CASHMERES
|
A large "Fiber Separator" from Belfast Mini Mills is now here at Pine Needle Farm. I can process your raw
cashmere into a beautiful cloud, ready for spinning.
Since I am focusing exclusively on dehairing cashmere, and I raise cashmere goats myself, I feel I
can do a very professional and thorough job of dehairing your cashmere. I also am a handspinner, so I know
what the finished product should be like to yield the best quality hand spun yarn.
I am passionate about everything to do with cashmere, so I will treat your fiber with the utmost respect and
care that it deserves. Quality over quantity.
I am specializing in dehairing individual fleeces for the handspinner. I enjoy dehairing the
individual fleeces!
There is a big advantage in dehairing the individual fleece compared to batches of fleece. Since each goat
has a slightly different fleece covering their body, just like every human being has a slightly different head of
hair, dehairing each fleece separately makes the best finished product. The dehaired fiber comes out so
soft and smooth looking, with a more uniform length and feel to it.
There is a good marketing advantage to being able to identify the goat that a particular fleece came off of, as
opposed to a batch of combined fleece, even if it is from your own herd. Plus, as a breeder, that gives you a
much better knowledge of what a particular goat produces, and how well it's fleece processes.
While this method isn't practical for everyone, especially those with larger herds that want yarn back from the
mill, those with small herds and that want to work with the fiber themselves can really benefit from this. Those
with larger herds can have certain goats' fleeces done separately to see how that bloodline, in general, looks
as a dehaired product. If you have a special award winning fleece, or a few exceptional goats that are your
favorites, you now have the opportunity to have their fleeces dehaired individually!
Pricing, based on incoming weight

Guidelines for the best processing
1. Please mark each bag clearly with the animal's identification name or number so nothing gets mixed
up anywhere.
2. If you send me the raw fleece to wash and dehair, please pick out as much vegetation as you can. (see
pictures below) I really don't like getting my fingers pricked by stickers and burrs, it hurts! Plus all that
weighs more than the cashmere, so it ends up costing you more to process. Tiny little bits of hay and
dandruff will usually, but not always, come out by the time it's done. At least the majority of it will. You
might end up having to pick out some as you are spinning it. The clearance between the drums is so
small that only fiber goes through it. Sticks and pieces of hoof trimmings jam it up and cause a real
mess. So please take the time to really sort through the fleece and send it as clean as you can get it.
3. If you send felted "ropes" of fleece, I can run it through the machine, but it will get torn up pretty
badly and be short. It will be good for felting, but not very good for spinning. If you can't pull apart the
fleece with your fingers, the machine can't either. It either gets thrown down into the waste bins or
breaks as it goes through, resulting in a very short fiber to work with.
I am focusing exclusively on cashmere, and dehairing is the only process I do, so your fiber will be processed in a
timely manner. The current turn-around time is about ten to twelve weeks.
I will be shutting down the machine for the winter starting December 1st and I will start up again around
March 15th, or when the sun starts shining more again. Since we are an off-grid solar powered farm and
this machine uses a lot of electricity, it is not economically viable to run it during the darkest days of
winter. Fuel for the generator I have to use to run the machine when the sun doesn't shine is too
expensive! Plus having a noisy generator running all day totally defeats the purpose of having solar
power in the first place.

See all the hay in the cashmere? Now look what happens
when it goes through the machine, it gets chopped up and
spread throughout the fiber. It may or may not all come
out. It would really benefit you, the producer, to take the
time to pick this kind of stuff out of the fiber before sending
it to be dehaired! Besides the mess, hay and other foreign
material weighs more than cashmere. Remember, you are
paying on incoming weight.
I am now scheduling 2012 dehairing customers, so if you would like me to dehair your
fleece, please contact me and I'll put you on the list. First come, first serve.
